Overview
A herniated disc occurs when the jelly-like material that cushions the spinal cord, called the nucleus pulposus, slips out of its normal place in between the vertebrae. There are several types of herniated disc, which depend on where and how the disk ruptures.
These include cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacral. Each one can cause different symptoms, so it is important for patients to be aware of what type they have and understand the treatment options available to them. Treatment for a herniated disk will also vary depending on what type it is.
In this post, we will discuss each type of herniated disc and their corresponding treatments in detail so that patients can become more informed about their condition. Stay tuned!
What is Herniated Disc?
A herniated disc, also known as a slipped or ruptured disc, is a condition that occurs when the inner, jelly-like material of a spinal disc leaks out through a tear in the outer casing. This can happen due to a number of reasons, including wear and tear due to aging, injury, or repetitive motions. When the disc herniates, it can press on the nearby nerves, causing pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness in the affected area
While herniated discs can occur anywhere along the spine, they are most common in the lower back (lumbar spine) and neck (cervical spine). In some cases, herniated discs can heal on their own with time and conservative treatment methods. However, in other cases, surgery may be required to remove the herniated disc and relieve the pressure on the nerves.
Types of Herniated Disc
There are four main types of herniated discs, which include cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral. Let’s take a look at each one in more detail.

1. Cervical Herniated Disc
A cervical herniated disc occurs when there is a rupture in one of the discs in the neck region. The most common symptom of a cervical herniated disc is neck pain that radiates down into the shoulders or arms. Other symptoms may include muscle weakness, numbness, or tingling in the affected arm or hand. In some cases, the symptoms may mimic those of a heart attack, such as chest pain or shortness of breath.
2. Thoracic Herniated Disc
A thoracic herniated disc occurs when there is a rupture in one of the discs in the upper back region. The most common symptom of a thoracic herniated disc is back pain that radiates into the chest or abdomen. Other symptoms may include muscle weakness, numbness, or tingling in the affected area. In some cases, the symptoms may mimic those of a heart attack, such as chest pain or shortness of breath.

3. Lumbar Herniated Disc
A lumbar herniated disc occurs when there is a rupture in one of the discs in the lower back region. The most common symptom of a lumbar herniated disc is back pain that radiates into the legs or feet. Other symptoms may include muscle weakness, numbness, or tingling in the affected area. In some cases, the symptoms may mimic those of a heart attack, such as chest pain or shortness of breath.
4. Sacral Herniated Disc
A sacral herniated disc occurs when there is a rupture in one of the discs in the sacral region (the lower part of the spine). The most common symptom of a sacral herniated disc is back pain that radiates into the buttocks or legs. Other symptoms may include muscle weakness, numbness, or tingling in the affected area. In some cases, the symptoms may mimic those of a heart attack, such as chest pain or shortness of breath.
Treatment for Herniated Disc
The treatment for a herniated disc will vary depending on the location of the herniation and the severity of the symptoms. In most cases, conservative treatment methods, such as rest, ice, heat, and anti-inflammatory medication, will be enough to relieve the pain and other symptoms. If these methods do not provide relief, other options, such as physical therapy or epidural injections, may be recommended. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the herniated disc and relieve the pressure on the nerves
